Brief Outline of Oneida Housing Authority
On
April 20, 1963 the Oneida Tribal Council passed a Tribal Ordinance
thereby establishing the Oneida Housing Authority. Today, the Oneida
Housing Authority is the TDHE. The Oneida Tribe passed a resolution
making the Oneida Housing Authority the Tribally Designated Housing
Entity.
On
June21, 1963 the Oneida Housing Authority held its first meeting. This
meeting took place at the Holy Apostles Parish Hall in Oneida with
Artley Skenandore presiding as Chairman. The remaining four members
were Norbert Hill, Ruth Baird, Oscar Archiquette and Vivian DeCoteau.
The
first resolution passed named Ruth Baird as secretary. The major of
business was to adopt the by laws of the Oneida Housing Authority.
Other items of business were the election of officers, designation of a
meeting place and where the housing office would be. The Holy Apostles
Parish Hall was designated as the meeting place and the offices of the
Oneida Housing Authority. The Oneida Housing Authority office has since
moved a couple of times with a permanent office located on Commissioner
and Doxtator Street. The permanent office was constructed in 2003.
The
first project (10-1) consisted of 24 low rent units and 10 elderly
units. This project was completed in June of 1967 totaling a cost of
$458,212.00. The original contract was awarded in 1965.
The
first Mutual Help project (10-2) was sweat equity and totaled 20 units.
The contract was awarded in 1967 and finished in 1969 totaling
$669,016.00.
As of
January 2007, the Oneida Housing Authority has a total of 340 units
under its care. There are 219 rental units and 121 homeownership homes.
As to
date, the Oneida Housing Authority employs 32 employees and has a Board
of Commissioners which consists of 7 and are appointed by the Business
Committee.
As you
can see, the Oneida Housing Authority has come a long way to where it
started 43 years ago.
